I am reading an old book(1968 I think) entitled "A Catholic case for contraception" in which he and a number of distingusied theologians dissent from humanae vitae which is fascinating reading but I understand he has changed his position and is now most well known for his support of capitalism and more recently as a pawn of the US government to try and argue the case for war in Iraq to the Vatican.(unsucessfully obviously).

Does anyone have any strong views on this man or know much about him? Thanks in advance.

Yes, he has changed his position on contraception and has now become an orthodox Catholic. He is a regular columnist at the conservative magazine, National Review, and while I would not characterize him as a "pawn" (since the U.S. government is not noted for its love of orthodox Catholics), it is true that he was asked to make a case for the Iraq war fitting into "just war" teaching - you may think it was unsuccessful, but the Pope, while reiterating his opposition to war, has been very clear that he believes the primary responsibility for ending the war is Saddam Hussein's.

Chritine I was being a bit cheeky with the pawn call, but I believe he was acting on behalf of the US state department. He did fail, his arguments were rejected outright. Like it or bump it alright!
