Godmother and baptism

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

My brother and his wife have asked me to be the godmother of their first child, my beautiful niece. I am French and I just got married to an American citizen last January. We are now in the process of adjusting my residence status here in the US, and for some complicated reasons, I cannot leave the country. Here is my question: If I can't attend the baptism, can I still be the official godmother? Can a "surrogate" godmother witness the christening for me?

Yes, a "proxy" godmother can perform the required duties at the batptismal ceremony. See http://www.ew tn.com/library/DOCTRINE/SPONSORS.TXT for more details.
