Find someone that can speak Japanese and is willing to help you learn. Try to speak only Japanese to them and practice often. It also helps to have some kind of text book to help you because even if your Japanese speaking friend is fluent in Japanese, they may not know where to start when trying to teach it. ^_^

it took my cousin 7 years of really hard work to learn how to speak full japanese. He lives in japan now too he does anime voice acting (in japanese). I dont know what he has done so far, but i am going to tokyo this summer with him! he will try to teach me how to speak/read some japanese and he will show me how a real anime is made. i will be leaving july 11 but i will still post here. I better bring my laptop though, i dont know how to use japanese comps

If you have nothing to do in the meantime, you can go to < www.japanese-online.com > and go through the lessons. They're free so don't expect too much from it.

dont forget, it also depends on ur ability to grasp a language. if u cant grasp it easily, then itll take longer, and more effort. also, itll be hard because u will have to learn a whole new alphabet, but its a worthy task to take on, just not an easy one.

Yes yes, total immersion is the way to go. But buying and trying to read a lot of Japanese comics (if you can a least read hiragana and katakana) can help you to to learn and retain some Japanese because you are applying it in an interesting way (well, mostly I'm just desperate to understand the stories, but it really helps me...)
