I also liked DBZ cuz it was the first anime I saw. DB was good because we all thought Goku had a limit to his power. But then Frieza stepped in, and everything got screwedm up. Then Buu forced them to bring power levels near Billions. Then GT is plain stupid. An evil dragon spreads the dragonballs throught the universe, which will explode if the dragonballs are not found. The power levels push past billions,and everyone dies, but the series ends on a good note... WTF?

OK, so DBZ is pretty retarded, and YES! Gundam and Inu-yasha and many other animes. And of course, DBZ did not open America's doors to anime. It was just that many of us grew up watching only DBZ because Cartoon Network was still a premium channel. But once Cartoon Network went to basic cable, I realized that there were animes better than DBZ. Like I said before, the series grows in its retardation as it progresses, and yes many of the plots are weak and very hard to follow, but thats why people keep watching. It keeps you wonder what the hell happened to mr. x as he battled mr. y as he's launching his super powerful z beam. And the ridiculous high-speed, barely visible action confuses you into watching 'til the end. Yes, there are many animes that are far better than DBZ, but once you watch more than 5 or 6 episodes your hooked. Plus, the massive amount of merchandising makes it hard to avoid. So to answer you question, I have no idea.

The only time I will lay off is when people finally realize that DBZ is one of, if not the shittiest anime in existence. People who don't like Gundam have their reasons, people who like it have their reasons, people who hate DBZ have their reasons, but PEOPLE WHO LOVE DBZ HAVE NO REASON TO. Almost every action anime is technically and aesthetically superior, with the possible exception of the dubbed Sailor Moon. I call everyone who adores DBZ over all other anime, NOT people who casually watch it. Sure I may think major fanboys who say that DBZ is the zenith in animation are dipshits, but anyone who watches it from time to time to see what happened is alright to me.

And yes, you didn't say DBZ was good. You said it was great, read your first message again. The story is shit, I can explain the storyline in a few sentences.

Guy finds Goku on Earth, attempts to bring him back but Goku kills him. Goku goes to heaven, comes back and kills the guy's allies. Gokue then goes to another planet to defeat another bad guy, trains on the way, kills the bad guy. He goes back to Earth, gets a disease, kills an Android, blah blah blah, kills another guy sent to kill him. The fights are utterly terrible, the only strategy they seem to have it scream for a few episodes, get their asses kicked, then hold out until Goku arrives. WOW! HOW INCREDIBLY INTERESTING IT IS TO SEE THE SAME GUY IN THE SAME FIGHT BUT WITH A DIFFERENT ENEMY WITH A DIFFERENT SETTING!

Well talking about DBZ fans I kinda pity them, it's not your fault you became addicted to dbz, in fact that was the only "decent" fighting anime back there, of course most of you guys never had the luck to live in europe and discover SAINT SEIYA at the same time, since they were aired at the same time many fans realised that there was an alternative to the nazi dream of a superior dbz race. Of course I'm only talking about myself and to be honest i really liked dbz at it's begining, but when saint seiya came out and i could really have a kick ass fighting anime with a much better scenario ( wich in dbz case is not really difficult you'll tell me...) i saw that it was mainly a tablescrap good for newbies, but since some people became real anime fans (and not worshippers of DBZ) it should be respected ( a little ) for that.

I think the real question has become "Why do so many people hate dbz"? I hear alot of things about "It has no story" or the dialogue is lame, i.e. "I will defeat you! No you will not because I have been hiding my true power mwhahaha!" if these are your reasons of why it sucks then you have no argument

reason 1) anyone saying that the dialogue is shit is most likley basing thier views on the DUBBED verion. Subtitled japanese watchers will aggree, the dub is made corney in order to appeal to kids, the jap version is MUCH more in depth, if you don't believe me, then go compare. These are great sites to get some camparison out of www.pojo.com otakualliance.com dbz-uncencored.com and dragonball undubbed (don't know the sites address)

reason 2) the show does have a story, and a damn good one at that, it's just that it's stretched out so much you can't tell. but there are alot of unexpected twists to it, but it's not that unexpected because almost everyone reads plot summaries before they watch the actual show. That and the characters are very....emotional....they have very human characteristics

so really, why do so many people bash on this show?

You have bad grammar (According to your standards anyway, one little misspelling/nonexistent word = Bad grammar!) because there's actually more than one way to spell "Your", and you're supposed to spell it differently depending on the situation. Yes, I said "You're". I'm sure the concept of this is like an epiphany to you.

WOW...you people have been spending a lot of time arguing about something as insignificant as do you like this or that. Even after months of agruing about it no one has managed to convince anyone to change their opinion.

Why can't we let bygones be bygones? In life not everyone is going to agree with everyone else. That's what makes life interesting. It would be pretty boring if everyone liked the same things. You'd know everything about everyone else. What good is that? I know conversations would get boring really fast.

True Anime fans. Arguments spiralling up from every opinion-based forum. Bored people talking and talking. Yay. I love anime. I watched several different animes and enjoyed them before I saw DBZ. Then DBZ became my favorite (mainly because I gained a favorite character when I first saw it). Now, the DB series' are still my favorite. However, now that I have read the manga and watched the japanese version, its almost painful to watch the Funimation version. Most people who judge DBZ base on the fact that the new watchers consist of idiots and children. Many anime fans who once liked the show also abandoned it. It's a good anime/manga (well the manga's better regardless)... Infact, it was the most popular of its time. Akira Toriyama is practically worshipped in the business. (Rather, to the first comment, no its not a landmark anime, but it was done by a landmark artist).

WHen Vegeta died during the Frieze saga, when Trunks defeated the Andriods in the "Free The Future" episode and he said "This is for Gohan" I was touched. I cryed!

When Goku came back to earth for a day and all his friends and family saw him for the first time at the World Tournament, when Goten hid behind Gohan. Those are special moments, that I will always remember.

When Vegeta gave his life to try and defeat Majin Buu, and when Picollo was touched by Gohans love.

This is what makes DBZ so special, so powerful, so awesome and yet so humane.

I love DBZ, always and forever!

I've read about half of these answers so far (i've been especially interested in sesshoumaruT's incessent agruing), and i've got one thing to say... It's completely pointless to say that DBZ sucks or doesn't suck, because it's purely opinion no matter who says what... besides, you all (not everyone that answered, just SesshoumaruT and the ones that were arguing with or against him) would have to be pretty immature to to let it escalate this far... Yes DBZ was, and still is very popular, but most of the fans aren't little children, they're elderly (i've met a few) adults, and youn adults (teenagers)

also, what SesshoumaruT said about the DBZ animation being crappy is technically not true, because it at the time that each saga first aired (and i mean "first aired" period) the animations were state of the art... by the time it had reached america and became famous worldwide, the animations had become almost obsolete.. i'll say more when i have the time

But why would DBZ have lasted over 10 years, had 42 Tankuban, over 400 episodes (not counting GT, but totaling DB and DBZ), be translated into dozens of languages, been a phenominon in ever country it's been brought to (Even here in the US though the English version sucks ass), and all that good stuff if it sucked? You may dislike it but consider what I said. Not EVERY body across the Earth is a moron, and while some DBZ fans may be Coo-coo (One of my friends is TOTALLY insane...Stay away from him if ya know what's good fer ya), I really don't think DBZ woulda been such a sucess and gotten a huge legion of loyal fans if it truly sucked.
