Please excuse my question if it seems too elementary, but I'm a new convert and just wish to be sure that I have the correct understanding. I read in the Catechism that Holy Communion separates us as well as cleanses us from sin, but in a following section it states that Communion isn't ordered for mortal sins, "The Eucharist is not ordered to the forgiveness of mortal sins—that is proper to the sacrament of Reconciliation. The Eucharist is properly the sacrament of those who are in full communion with the Church". Does this basically mean that we need to go to Reconciliation prior to receiving the Eucharist?....and that it is only ordered for the forgiveness of venial sins?

Yes, the Eucharist can only forgive venial sins. To receive the Eucharist with mortal sin on one's soul is called sacrilege. You cannot receive any sacrament except reconciliation without going to confession first. It is as easy as asking your priest before mass. He has to hear your confession because that is his job.

Actually you can receive baptism without confession first, and also the sacrament of the sick, if you are unconscious. But you are completely correct regarding the Eucharist.

It is true that it is the priest's responsibility to hear the confessions of his parishioners, but it is an imposition to ask him to do so before mass, unless he regularly makes himself available at that time. You should find out when the usual time for confession is in your parish, and make a point of being there.
