I don't know what it means. but one thing is for sure Fooly Cooly FLCL is one of the most mind blowing examples of modern animation I or any of you have ever seen. AKIRA, Ghost in the Shell, Fooly Cooly, CowboyBebop, Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D, Felix the Cat, DragonBall, The Wall, Heavy Metal prt 1 and a whole list of others which I can't commit to memory are extrodinary feats of mans ability to relate to himself and his neighbors through the usage of shape color, and story line. Visual Communications at it's best. I too am an artist and have often thought about animating my characters. As a noun, furi, means; appearence, pretense, or to feign ignorance. There are also a couple of na adjectives furi; disadvantageous or unfavorable; and free, unoccupied, or freelance. As for kuri, it's a noun, meaning; chestnut. And has nothing to do with the curry mentioned in the show, since the correct Japanese pronunciation of curry is; kare (ka-re'). There for obviously furi kuri means: To feign ignorance about chestnuts. Except that makes about as much sense as the show. The Japanese are well known for joke names and puns anyway. So it could be a play on furikaeru, which means; to look back, to turn around; look back at, or review. In fact one example is: kodomo no koro o furikaeru to, totemo natsukashii desu. Which traslates: "Thinking back over my childhood, I feel very nostalgic." Which seems to be what the show is about anyway. The whole growing up and coming of age thing...That, and fooling around. So I'm going to have to go with the heavy petting definition here as well. I mean if the main character doesn't know what it means, I guess he'll have to figure it out like the rest of us. Damnit! I need to watch FLCL again! After all, Review IS one of the definitions. Lemme get back to you on this one guys. Maybe I'll even have a definition for Googly Oogely for you too. Drink the Pulp? : P

Anyway if you read the title it says furi kura, and a kura is a storehouse. Also an air conditioner. i.e. cooler. So there's little doubt it's meant to be suggestive and ambiguous at the same time. furi kuri, fooly cooly, felikuli felikula . . . I'm spent. I've been checking the last epi of a fan sub and they have furikuri as getting stroked, which seems to support the heavy petting definition. However to fondle and to caress have the same definition, which is; aibu suru. And massage is just massaji, and rub is kosuru, ans stroke is naderu. But, if you read the words in the manga style part, it's written guri guri ( or sometimes kuri kuri and kuri kura etc.... And the only things I can find on that are guri guri are; a type of tea, a dessert thats a cross between ice cream and sherbert (goody goody), and a Japanese adult video called the Guri Guri Mambo. There is an anime called Guri Guri with Megume Hayashibara in it. And ALL of Megumi Hayashibara's charcters without exception have some heavy sexuality behind them. Read into that what you will. I don't think furi kuri is a word you can just look up in your jishyo, even the slang ones. For example, fera means; fellatio. And fakku mean just what it sounds like. Even Ta Kun doesn't know what it means and he's the star of the show. And as he says: "It doesn't matter what furi kuri is." So hear it is . . . Furi Kuri (fooly kooly) just a made up word that is meant to sound dirty. If anyone has a better definition, I'd love to hear it.

By zenmigawa On 2003-09-21 03:10AM what everyone else says. FLCL could mean ANYTHING. kazuya tsurumaki- sensei, the director himself, has never revealed what FLCL's supposed to mean during his commentary on all three american DVDs. so yeah. FLCL could mean anything.

personally, in english, FLCL (fooly cooly) could sound like an odd way of expressing "fooling around is cool." fooling around in the sexual, flirty sorta way. at least, that's what it sounds like to me.

FLCL could be the japanese shortening of the syndrome name haruko- nurse gave to naota's growing-horns-out-of-his-head dilemma. if i remember correctly, haruko called it the Flictonic Klipple Waver Syndrome (of which the "flictonic klipple waver" part is pronounced in japanese as "FURIkutoniku KURIppuru ueibaa"). to which naota could only catch the FURI and KURI parts of the syndrome's japanese name. and thus, the anime title was first mentioned.

and then there are the definitions that fly by wicked fast in the Next Episode segment for episode 6, that synch point thankfully caught and recorded the definitions and those definition's definitions in the dvd booklet that came with FLCL american DVD volume 3. FLCL could be an acronym for the following words: - flip clock - foolish cleverness - flimsy claim - flighty clipper - flint cleaver - Fleming, Clement - flection climate - fleecy clew

and about the repeated use of "kuri-kuri" in those frightening manga scenes. a FLCL fansub i've seen was able to accurately translate the "kuri-kuri" old-man shigekuni uses into expressions related to twisting (after all, all you see him do when he says "kuri-kuri" is waggling his fingers and waving his wrist like he was twisting bread, or nipples, given the fact that both shigekuni and kamon are perverts).

I'm pretty sure it's nonsense. However, Furi means "shake", and some people ment fondle. Also Naota's dad gets all nasty in the Manga scense when he mentions "Furi Kuri", so maybe...However, it could also be BOTH. For example, in the Dragonball Z 2nd Opening song WE GOTTA POWER, the things like "No-Ten P-Kan" and "Ippai Oppai" are not translated. Despite that, No-ten is something to do with the sky or air, and ippai oppai means "A cup full of breasts". No joke. So maybe it's got that double meaning of nonsense and a true meaning. I don't think we'll know for sure. Itsu ka minna, soshite GOHAN WA NANBA WAN DA!!!!!
