Is that even legal?
-- Anonymous, September 23, 2003
Yes... as yet, the license for Naruto hasn't been purchased here in the States by any distributor, such as FUNimation, so no U.S. copyright laws are being broken.
-- Anonymous, September 23, 2003
well, good luck then. I have all of them already
-- Anonymous, September 23, 2003
It probably isn't legal, since you're selling other people's work: you didn't do any of the translation or typsetting or encoding. Anyone, if anyone is lazy/rich/stupid enough to pay for episodes they can easily get for free, maybe they DESERVE to be fleeced by you.
-- Anonymous, September 24, 2003
u idiot that is very illegal it's vcd if u do that on ebay they will take it off and sue your ass damn common sense tells u this!!!!
-- Anonymous, September 24, 2003
The translators don't own the rights, either, so I'm not stealing from them. They freely choose to make their work available to the masses... nobody forces them to.And the very nature of the filesize of these episodes limits the viewers of Japanese anime to only those with high-speed internet access and the knowledge of how and where to download them. Half of the questions in this forum are "WHERE CAN I FIND ANIME x?"
This, at least, gives people a cheap and easy way to get some great anime to watch, which they otherwise might not be able to, without cutting into the original creators' profits.

Assuming you put 4 eps in a CD, that would mean you used 13 CDs, I don't know about you but I can buy blank CDs for 10-20 cents at fries or staples. I personally think it is stupid to profit off fansubs, especially fansubs that are very common if people know what to use(irc, winmx, etc.)
Then again, controller is right, you could hook some http leecher with a deal like this. I guess ignorance is what keeps the economy moving.

Actually, each VCD only holds 3 episodes, so the winning bidder will receive 17 VCDs, each individually labeled in a slim jewel case. And while you may be able to buy an unburned CD for $0.10 each, you're not bidding on a blank CD... you're bidding on the Naruto episodes FOUND on the VCDs.Considering how much time it would take to locate and download all 51 episodes, even with a high-speed connection (20+ minutes of download time per episode, if you're lucky), whoever wins this set is getting a FANTASTIC deal! :)

It's legal, some ppl who don't have fast connections buy that stuff off Ebay all the time. Take some time to have a look and you'll see a lot of ppl are doing it.
-- Anonymous, September 24, 2003
It is NOT legal to sell them. Fansubbers never make any profit from the fansubs, only praise. The fact that they are not licensed yet makes it legal to dowload/upload, but not to sell them. Its just as legal to download internationally unlicensed PlayStation games and sell them. You CAN, however, give them away for free, and just charge for the shipping and/or the cost of the disc.

Considering the LOW price I'm auctioning the VCDs at, minus the costs of the discs, the jewel cases, shipping the merchandise, AND the eBay and PayPal costs I'll have to pay, just to advertise the auction... I'll be making very little, if ANY profit from this.In fact, I could very likely end up losing money.
The main peron who WILL benefit from this sale will be whomever ends up winning the auction! So, anyone interested in getting this great anime series, "NARUTO," go to the link below and bid TODAY!

Sadly, im very interested but i dont have a credit card so i cant go on e bay.
-- Anonymous, September 24, 2003
I wouldn't consider this to be illegal but no matter how you explain it, in my opinion, you are trying to gain profits in the expense of the hard work done by the fansubbers and that is very wrong. the way you sound, i don't think you do this to 'help others' but rather to gain something. but then again, if people are willing to pay that kind of money, what can we say?
-- Anonymous, September 24, 2003
Of course I'm doing it to gain something, otherwise I'd be giving them away! However, whatever profit I may get will be minimal at best.Fansubbers CHOOSE to translate and distribute these anime on the internet for free and that's their right to do so.
Unfortunately, it leaves out a HUGE number of people who either can't (because they don't have high-speed internet access or the time) or don't know where and how (due to lack or knowledge/ability) to download these popular anime available to American audiences only on the 'net.
Just as the fansubbers are doing work translating the anime, I'm the one spending time and money downloading them, converting the files to VCD format for TV viewing, burning the VCDs, packaging them and shipping them off to whomever wants them.
I, however, would prefer recouping most, if not all of the costs of my efforts in providing the NARUTO anime series to those who, for whatever reason, are unable to view it on their own.
Consider it mercenary if you like... I consider it smart, and mutually beneficial to myself and those who'd like to have the series, but just can't.
...At least until a U.S. distributor picks it up.

a very intresting conversation with all ya guys
-- Anonymous, October 07, 2003
I think thats its unfair for you to sell something that you had no contribution to. No offense but thats just a desperate attempt to make money from stupid people...
-- Anonymous, October 08, 2003
No, just people unable to get the series any other way.
-- Anonymous, October 08, 2003
I don't know. It seems ok but I don't like you!

Do any of you know how good Naruto is? Anyone who buys that crap from him is basically ripping him off. I'd buy it if i didnt already have episodes 1-44. O well, i'm gonna get back to watching episode 45
-- Anonymous, October 17, 2003
i think it's a very good deal for me considering it takes me 6 weeks to download one episode having my computer on 24/7 but very luckly for me i got my cousin with LAN who sends it to me with instant messenger. So i got all of them up to episode 54.Anyways as a side note to M. Jones, how did u make VCD because i've tried but it never worked.

<> There are a number of ways to make VCDs... some complicated, some easy. I opt for easy. I just use Roxio Toast 5, a CD/DVD burning program... it has options for burning everything from mp3 discs to VCDs and does it very well. A 3-episode VCD takes only 8 minutes to burn using it. You can buy it online from PC or MAC software 'sites for about $80. A little expensive, but more versatile than software that comes with your computer.

"Yes... as yet, the license for Naruto hasn't been purchased here in the States by any distributor, such as FUNimation, so no U.S. copyright laws are being broken"
The Digital Millenium Copyright Act signed by Bill Clinton is a protection of ALL intellectual property including materials oversea. Fansubs itself already violated it.
Another thing, distributing AND selling require you to buy a license for it. You seem to confuse violating copyright and violating distribution rights.
-- Anonymous, October 20, 2003
Scratch the last part about there being a difference between copyright and distribution rights. However, the fact that it requires a license to distribute for free or for profit still stands.

Dangit! why dont' you ship to canada!!! i want to buy em man!
-- Anonymous, October 23, 2003
You guys don't think this is legal.... Interesting...., Its quite legal.. INFACT you can buy the DVD version of the Fansubs Created in JAPAN of all places... From places like www.meganimedvd.com and places like that. 5 Bucks is not bad at all... it takes at least 15 hours to convert 60 min worth of AVI to MPEG. One episode is 20 min long.. 51 X 20Min = 1020Min which 255 HOURS of Conversion time!! not including burning time. Anyway, the downloaded Fansubs have WAYYYY better Subtitles then the ones you can buy which are professionaly done and distributed on DVD. If you don't have High speed internet buy the VCD from this guy or, If you do have high speed internet then you can get all the episodes from www.animesuki.com using bittorrent.
