Tsk, tsk... trying to trade and distribute material owned by a U.S. distributor??? That's illegal...
-- Anonymous, September 30, 2003
One, no ones distributing it, and two i didn;t know it was lisenced, therefore, there will be no replies on where to get it, and so it's not illegal. Anyway, i just want to know what it's about, as it was recommended to me by a friend. If it was good anyway, i would buy it, as i have done wil NGE. The fact that you are even trying to grade you illegal activities with my simply curious nature into the wider aspects of anime, shows how foolish and simple minded you are. You are the one who is selling Naruto VCD;s for profit, taking credit for the fansubber;s hard work and time, and i frankly think that that is as low as they get. Stop trying to cover up ur disgrace, and either take your stupid actions off ebay, or leave this forum and don;t come back.

LOL... you're silly. Outlaw Star was a staple on Cartoon Network until about a year ago. It's been licensed here in the United States for years. If it was recommended to you by a friend, they should have been able to tell you that.Besides, unlike what I'm selling, Outlaw Star's readily available for sale here in the U.S.... you can buy DVD collections of it here: http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=PIO010440
And I'm hardly taking credit for fansubbers work. They've given themselves extensive credit loud and clear at the beginning of each and every episode they translate.
Perhaps you should reexamine your own methods of getting anime before critcizing others.

hey, my ways of getting anime are fine. I download from a fansubber. If it is available on DVD i will buy it, if not i will wait. I don;t sell it for money because it's not mine to sell. It belongs to the creator. By selling it, you are disrespecting the creator and fansubbers, because u are doing it for selfish reasons. The fansubbers do it so that you may enjoy it, not so that you can start up a wee buisness selling their time and effort as well as the creators to line your own pocket. and hey, i don;t have cartoon network, and i don;t live in the US, so i wouldn;t know about it being there, and for all i know, my mate could well have know it was lisenced, but he never said, and so i asked on the forum if i could get it. I'm not saying the people who buy ur illegal copies are bad, i just think that they're either ignorant of the fact that it's illegal, or really stupid to buy illegal, crap quality VCD's that can be downloaded. I don;t download lisenced anime, because, A) i can;t, and B) i'd rather buy it and have the DVD quality. So stop trying to justify your greed, idiot!

Jones, if you ever watched any shows from anime-keep they will have a warning of getting ripped if you buy fansubs before commerical intermission. Fansubs are illegal, selling it is also illegal, and the fact that you are not responsible for fansubbing and getting profit off it adds more wrong into what you did.

The self-righteous hypocrisy of you people who make a regular habit of pirating and distributing illegal material never ceases to amuse me. If you admit that fansubbing's illegal, yet you not only support it, but download it, trade and distribute it yourselves, then you have no legs to stand on your soapboxes criticizing me.It's interesting watching you trying to justify yourselves, though. I suppose even criminals need to feel secure about what they're doing. At least I'm honest about it.
-- Anonymous, September 30, 2003
Honest? You were avoiding the issue that you were selling fansubs that was NOT done by you. You merely stated that you didn't take their credit(probably only because you can't encode it to wipe the credit out). You didn't say you did anything wrong either, so you're just one of us.
-- Anonymous, September 30, 2003
Exactly my point. Yet you and many others act as though I've somehow committed some unspeakable act no decent human being should tolerate. It sounds ridiculous coming from people who, two seconds later, will ask others for information on where and how to download anime that IS licensed here in America, as well as stuff that may not.And who on this message forum (or eBay, for that matter) would ever think that the fansubs were done by me, unless I said so? We all know who the fansubbing groups are. Plus WHY would anyone waste the time and energy necessary to try to electronically erase the fansubbing credits on those anime, likely ruining the very shows they hope to trade and/or sell??? All I'VE ever stated was that I had burned the episodes onto VCDs and were placing them up for bid to whomever wanted them. Any other silly accusations you level towards me are simply a product of your overactive imagination.
It's nice that you and others are willing and eager to jump to the defense of the fansubbers, but the fansubbers have no more "right" to those episodes than I do... they don't own the anime and their subtitling the episodes doesn't magically confer "creator rights" to them, either. Your hostility towards me is misdirected, since I'm neither hurting nor preventing them from fansubbing nor interfering with the legal distribution of NARUTO in this country... because no one owns the rights to it at this point.
-- Anonymous, September 30, 2003
everything you said is true except you missed one point. Fansubbers and people who put fileservers on irc like me didn't earn money from distroing fansubs/dvdrips, you did. You didn't take the credit for the fansubs, but the point is that you profit off of it.
So, why should you or anyone else profit off fansubs/dvdrips when you got it for free yourself?
-- Anonymous, September 30, 2003
Contrary to what most people believe, ignorance of the law is not a defense. Just because you did not know it was being distributed does not mean that you wouldn't be subject to fines if they went RIAA on your ass.

well, u keep saying that the fans and fansubbers are as bad as you. somehow i don;t think so. U sell only for greed and to make money as the fan subbers do it to allow people to enjoy the anime FREE OF CHARGE! It is also good for the anime buisnes of legal items as it generates interest.-- don't worry about it. (notquiterightMr.Jones@aol.com), October 01, 2003 "Here, in Los Angeles, we have the UCLA Anime Club. And we get open arms and a big smile, from the Japanese Animation Production companies. Why?, they don't care if we are, somehow able encode there episodes, and distribute them. Because it is promotion. AS LONG AS THERE IS NO SELLING OF THE ANIMATION, THE ANIMATION PRODUCTION COMPANIES WELCOME FANSUBBING, AND IN MANY CASES SUPPORT IT, AND CONTRIBUTE TO IT. AT UCLA FOR EXAMPLE, THERE IS A TIGHT NITCH BETWEEN ANIMATION PRODUCTION COMPANIES AND THE CLUB. WHY?, BECAUSE, THE BASIC FUNDAMENTAL IDEA IS THAT THE ANIMATION WILL BECOME POPULAR TO A CERTAIN POINT, IN WHICH, A RESPECTABLE, REPUTABLE, DISTRIBUTOR, WILL COME ALONG AND PURCHASE DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS. If we fansubbers betray this mechanism, and start the selling, and destroying the trust, given to us, by the Japanese Animation Industry, were fucked. The'll comlain, and fansubbing will most certainly be hurt, which, most probably will hurt the underground distribution of Japanese Fansubs, in the long run. SO DON'T DO THIS SHIT. FUCK I COULD DO WHAT YOUR DOING, I HAVE ALL THE EPISODES, BUT I DON'T CAUSE IT AIN'T COOL. Peace out.Don't betray the trust, and don't fuck with the underground establishment, and no, the people that copy the episodes of TV, are not doing anything illegal, just like your not doing anything illegal, if you tape your favorite show, with a pre- programmed VCR. I REPEAT, WHAT THE ENCODERS DO, AND THE TRANSLATORS DO IS NOT ILLEGAL, YOU ON THE OTHER HAND ARE COMMITTING A CRIME."
i think this summs it up well, that fansubbing is benificial to the economy of Naruto, whereas fake VCD;s are only damaging it by giving profit to those who are selfish enough to use other people's time and money for themselves. Stop trying to say we're all like you, cause we're not.... we're not all slimey gits interested in our own finincial welfare, over the wellbeing of an anime series.

I doubt you can even dub a vhs tape legally if the material is copyrighted, which 100% of motion pictures are. And distributing without buying the rights first is also considered illegal even if you are not doing it for profit(this one I'm not so sure on, if anyone has any link related to this issue correct me on this.)
-- Anonymous, October 01, 2003
You're correct, Ubb, as I've pointed out to these guys numerous times. Unfortunately, they're either too busy ranting to understand this or have deluded themselves into thinking fansubbing and distributing anime they have no rights to is totally legal.
-- Anonymous, October 01, 2003
BTW, the argument that anime companies "welcome" fansubbing and encourage it in order to get an American distributor to pick it up makes no sense. Why encourage people to flood the market with millions of copies of your product, which will then continue be passed along to anyone else also interested in it?Within a very short time, most (if not ALL) of your potential buying public would have easy access to free versions of the very thing you hope to sell to them... and in a much more "desirable" state (uncut and undubbed). WHY would those potential customers then BUY something fansubbers have already provided for FREE to anyone with an internet connection? Most of them WOULDN'T... making the purchasing of licensed anime much less profitable and desirable for U.S. companies, resulting in LESS anime on store shelves.
Fansubbing, in truth, causes a lot MORE harm to the legal distribution of anime in this country than you guys would like to think.

Jones, incase you're wondering I'm not defending you here. For animes that I d/led I just distribute them for free, instead of turning it into a low-res VCD quality and sell them for profit.
As for the case of fansubbing hurting the sales of anime industry, that depends on the number of people who will decide on buying dvds by whether they have watched the fansub version of the anime previously. Assume that fansubs are prosecuted and it will never be available online, if people want to take everything for free like me, they will just wait for dvdrips, and if dvdrips are being persecuted too, I'll just switch hobbies. And for those who are willing to pay for anime dvds, they will buy it regardless of how much of the fansubs they watch in the first place.
It is very hard to justify banning fansubs because it is not directly involved in the loss of profit since there are no licenser to make money off a particular series/movie legally. And even if it is something everyone is sure will get licensed. You divide the two groups of anime fans: stingy bums like me, and die-hard otakus who has enough dvds to build a skyscraper. Stingy bums will think of any way to get animation illegally, and otakus will buy dvds whether or not pirating is possible.

I agree with Ubb. Most Anime fans... let's take Naruto for instance since that's what u were/are illegally selling. I would say that most fans would want the real thing. Instead of either having to watch it on ur computer, or having shite quality on VCD, u could buy it on DVD and have all the extra features as well as it possibly dubbed. There would also probably be other features. As well, i wasn;t simply talking about the actual series... due to the disrubtion of the fansubed episodes, more people want figures, the manga, and any merchandise, which, although can be forged, will almost certainly authentic, and is what makes alot of the money for a TV series. I'm not saying fansubbing is legal, but it's far from taking demand away, and if anything it's making more demand. Who would have heard of Naruto, or NGE, or Shaman King, if it weren't for the fansubbers who got them first? I doubt very many, but due to them, there is now a demand all over the world for merchandise, but u jones have explioted that demand and forfeited the trust between the fansubber and the watcher. U sicken me. Also, when a DVD version comes out, there will have to be rights sold, and that will make fansubbing and distribution illegal, therefore stopping fansubbing, and forcing people who don;t have the anime to resort to other ways to either get the fansubs, or to buy the DVD. As some companies have said with mp3's, these actually help the market. Although some people will only download and keep them, many real fans, who like the music will buyt the real thing, and i think that this will happen with anime. VCD making is just sad though, ur making money from other people's effort, and that;s wrong. Just cause u've got them, gives u no reason to exploit them, and as many animes say, it is not for selling.

Say what you like, but until Naruto IS picked up by a U.S. distributor, the only way for people to view the anime is by downloading it from the internet. For people with slow connections or who don't WANT to spend days downloading the series, getting the episodes on VCDs cheaply is a great option.
