looking for why charles gallagher was killed in 1878greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread |
My gg grandfather was charles gallagher. His burial card says killed on april 12, 1878. He was a teamster, lived on hampshire st and died with way more money than a teamster should have been able to make-$15,000!!! I just wondered if anyone might point me in the right direction of where to find out. I've been to all the newspaper's indexes and only found a obit listing the death. Perhaps someone out there has some inside info.....

The name Gallagher rings several bells but I cannot remember the first names. I know there were several noted Gallaghers. The one I remember right now is a famous legal case where a Gallagher won a lawsuit against a ship's captain who was a part of the vigilance committee after they had made the decision to banish Gallagher from California to Hawaii. The other thing I remember was that there was a Gallagher who was on the board of supervisors. There are some very rare books around that list the city's crimes. I think one is called something like the Police Gazette.

Thanks for the suggestion, Harry, I will check it out. I did connect with another person looking for a James Gallagher who died on the very same day. He was 3 yrs younger than Charles and I'm now wondering if they may have been brothers. Possibly up to something or got robbed?? He has even less info about his relative-think they were extremely secretive about their lives or payed newsmen off for no press. Thanks again for any help out there.

Well, when you said newsmen, that hit another bell. There was a Hearst, I think her name was Debbie, from the Hearst newspaper family, who married a Gallagher though that was like in the 1970s. Maybe he was decendant. But in Ireland, a Gallagher is like a Smith in this country so who knows.
