Supreme Court Justice Rehnquist Talks Retirement, Abortion Scramble Begins

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In an interview with NBC's "Today" show, Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist discussed his possible retirement soon. His remarks set off a scramble by groups on both sides of the abortion debate discussing the importance of replacing the only remaining Roe v. Wade dissenter on the court with another pro-life judge.

The nomination of judges has become, in the last 40 years, the most important job of the president. Supreme Court appointments by Republican presidents have been hit and miss. Some have started out being conservative, ie. strictly ruling on the constitutionality of law rather than trying to change it, and then veered to the left. There have been some real clunkers--Souter, O'Connor, and Kennedy, and some real good ones--Thomas, Rehnquist, and Scalia the most brilliant of all (and of course a Catholic). So we may or may not get a conservative judge with a Republican as President. But we will NEVER GET A CONSERVATIVE, NON-ACTIVIST JUDGE WITH A DEMOCRAT AS PRESIDENT.
