Was Christ crucified with the spikes through his hands or wrists? I used to believe through his wrists until I heard the custom was through their hands and a scientific show showed how through the wrists wouldn't work due to magor arteries they could hit and he would be held up better by through the hands and feet.

Wrist. The Hand would not have supported the wright of the body on the Cross, and he woudl have fallen off.The romans Knew how to drive the Nails into the arms without causing the artereis to rupture, and even if they did the spike itsself woudl rpevent too muh lood loss. The two lower arm bones woudl have supported his weight on the Cross.
However, if the Nails wher ein his hands, as tradiitonally portrayed, the tissue woudl have ripped and he wodl have fallen off the cross rather than remain and be crucified.

Historians say that crucifixion in the region that Christ was in at the time Christ lived was done either with spikes through the wrists or through the palms (and ropes were used to support the arms). We don't know exactly how Christ was crucified. In Christ,

I am not sure. I have read some old studies about this issue, where most believe that it was indeed through his hands, but used ropes to tie the forearms to the cross.

John 20 (KJV) 24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. 27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God.In this account in the Bible, it appears to be that it was in his hands. But then again, perhaps they didn't have a word for wrist in their language.

Let me encourage you not to dwell on this question for long as to do so is take attention from other things Jesus wants you to know, things that matter. Dont be lead astray, keep your focus on Jesus and seek him out and not through other men/women.Jesus is Lord. Not the pope.
-- Adrian Cromwell (catlitter@cox.net), March 27, 2004.
Adrian,The Catholic Church does not teach or believe that the Pope is Lord. Never has. Where do you get this?
-- Jim Furst (furst@flash.net), March 27, 2004.
Jim,
He gets it from Jack Chick: The Nightmare World of Jack T. Chick

You have to be a total ignoramus about Church History or just plain History to take Chick's writings seriously.Enrique

Back to the hands/wrist debate. There is some evidence that it was both. What do I mean? Some experts point out that if you were to bend the wrist forward then drive the nail from just below the center (just above the meanty part) perpendicular to the arm it would pass through from the center of the hand into the carples. This would create a hole in the hand while providing enough support to hold the wieght of the body. In addition, the nail would pass through a nerve (whose name I forget). Severing this nerve would cause the thumb to pull in. Interestingly enough, the image on the Shroud of Turin has no thumbs, as if they were bent over and hidden while all the blood is pooled at the wrist.Dano

wait. this is a mere question just to get me clear, because i don't understand catholic well (i am a christian to happens to stumble into this site, anyway). you see, you say that the Pope isn't the Lord. well, He isn't, of course, but i thought that the Pope's word is everything, even more important than the bible itself. for example, catholics don't eat meat on fridays (or something like that right? to sacrifice something or something like that..) and if you don't, it's considered a sin (the Pope starts it), but in the bible, it is never written that you sin if you don't sacrifice something on a friday. so.. you guys are actually following the Pope instead of the bible right?

Hey Karl! I understand completly what your saying! I used to say the same exact thing about Catholicism but I came to realize I was very ignorant. I'm a Catholic now and I can't beging to tell you how wonderful and beautiful it is. Praise the Lord. Check this book out for your answers, "A Biblical Defense For Catholicism," by Dave Armstrong, (a former Protestent) or check out this site, Biblical Evidence For Catholicism. May God bless you.

If you read your Bible (a book which was first compiled by the Catholic Church incidentally) you find that Jesus told Peter that he had full authority to define what is doctrinally binding on earth, and you also find that Jesus guaranteed the truthfulness of every binding doctrine His Church teaches. If you study history, you know that the present Pope is in a direct line of succession from Peter, and holds that same authority. That charism of infallibility pertains ONLY to formal declarations of doctrinal truth. It does not involve such matters as rules for fasting, in which case there is no "right" or "wrong". The Bible tells us we should fast. The rule governing abstinence from meat on fridays (which has not been in effect for over 40 years incidentally) was just a guideline to facilitate that biblical teaching.Where does the Bible authorize the formation of thousands of conflicting denominations? The biblical Church didn't have any denominations. It still doesn't. If you are truly concerned about following the Bible, ask yourself this question - how can thousands of separate denominational churches, whose doctrinal teachings conflict on virtually every point, all claim to be "following the Bible"? Can the Bible contradict itself? Or does following the Bible necessitate one undivided Church with no conflicting teachings? Once you deal with that issue, you will want to know if there is in fact one undivided Church with constant and true teaching. Yes. There is. The only Christian Church that existed until recent times. The Holy Catholic Church.

Hello Karlin,I am a Protestant who wishes to convert to Catholic because the Catholic Church is the original Christian Church established by Jesus Himself. I have discovered this through much reading and study of Scripture. You mentioned something about not eating meat on Fridays. This is fasting, something that Jesus commanded (He said "when you fast," not "if you fast"). And what's more, it's fasting along with all Catholics around the world. How much more beautiful can it be, than to do such a thing for God as a community?
