sex (married) for procreation only?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread |
Last mother's day, our priest in his homily stated that sex was for procreation only. He said this in no uncertain terms. Boy am I in trouble if he's right. My understanding is that sex must not exclude procreation.

JPII made it clear that sex is unitive and procreative. Only after a man and a woman have commited themselves to eachother and to the possibility of raising a child may their sex life explore the two spheres of sexuality.EC

EC-I'm married w/children. I think I understand the commitment and possibility of children part.

Dang, nonametoprotecttheparish, why do you have to be so full of yourself? EC was only agreeing with you. You're about as much of an ass as the priest you're talking about.Dan Brown

Sorry folks, I didn't read it that way. I meant no offense to EC or anyone else that wants to advise. I thought maybe EC missed the "married" part. And I wasn't saying the priest is an a**. I have too many strikes against me to imply that he is. If you can tone it down, I'd like to know if MY understanding is wrong.

Your understanding is perfectly correct. If this priest actually said "Procreation is the ONLY reason for sexual intercourse" then he is wrong. Even if he somehow gave that impression without actually saying it, you should take it up with him. The Church's position on sexual matters is misrepresented badly enough already without our own pastors misrepresenting it.

No prob.

Wait, I thought that that was the Churches position: that sex is only for procreation. I seem to have hit that so often here. And it is not my axiom, so generally I ignore the discussion that binds one to that axiom

Unfortunately some people here wrongly pretend that their own idiosyncratic view is "the Church's position". Read the Church's original authoritative documents: the two equally important and inextricably entwined purposes of sexual intercourse are procreation and the loving union of husband and wife. To artificially and deliberately exclude the possibility of procreation robs sexual intercourse of its deepest and truest essential meaning. For a couple to restrict sexual intercourse only to the purpose of procreation would also be wrong.

When one is married they must be open to life if they are to be having sex. As long as you do not deny this then it does not matter what age you are. If you welcome life at 70 years of age, and God sees it fit to give you a miracle, so be it. :o)God Bless.
