So what 's everybody listening to?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Anarchy 2 : One Thread

Seems like we get a pretty diverse crowd in here, so I was kind of wondering what kind of music everybody here listens to. A year ago, I probably would have said I was straight-up punk rock, but lately I've really been getting in to a lot of older stuff from just about every style of music. Obviously, the Ramones, the Clash, the Buzzcocks, the Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, the Damned...ect., but even beyond the old school punk. I love the Who (at least before they started doing that rock opera stuff), Zepplin and Floyd are pretty sweet...but what I really love is the protest music from the 60's and 70's. Just the raw energy in some of that stuff...all these musicians coming out to saw FUCK YOU!" to the establishment...I always admired that. Anybody here ever hear Four Way Street by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young? I'm convinced it is just about the greatest album of all time. The part where Stephen Stills goes off in a rant about Nixon in the middle of his song was awesome. The guitar work on the album was incredible. Neil Young and Stephen Stills just go into these seven minute long guitar battles...they just improvise for minutes at a time. I went to see Neil Young live last summer, and I was blown away by how much energy the guy had. He's sixty years old, and he's still jumping around the stage and busting strings on his Les Paul.

Then of course there's Bob Marley. He just kicks ass. He single-handedly brought reggae and ska to America...when you think about it, whithout him, a whole branch of the punk movement wouldn't exist if it didn't have that ska inspiration to draw from.

And the Beatles kick rediculous amounts of ass. I'm not too big a fan of their more pop-oriented stuff, but overall their music is incredible. John Lennon and Paul McCartney were geniuses. Too bad that succubus Yoko Ono came along. I could almost forgive that guy for shooting John if he had put a bullet in Yoko too.

Don't get me wrong, I love punk rock, but it's not heading in a positive direction. Pop-punk bands like Good Charlotte and MXPX are desecrating the genre. Warped Tour has been invaded by posers and teenyboppers. The mosh pit gets smaller every year. It's a sad, sad thing. I think Fat Mike needs to go in with a meat cleaver and thin out the ranks a bit.

What about you guys?

Pink Floyd. I love the Floyd. The album I'm listening to right now is Relics, probably their third best... first being Dark Side and Wish you Were Here... Damn fine records.

If I'm not listening to Floyd, you've got the Dead Kennedys, Sublime, King Crimson, the Dead, the Distillers, Sex Pistols, Definitely some Beatles, a little clash, and assorted Denis Leary and George Carlin here and there.

It's the older shit

U, Anti, Darkside is best listened to either while you're on pot, shrooms, or acid. That's how Floyd recorded it, that's how it should be absorbed.

For me, I don't much care for music these days. I used to be all about the alternative, but Radiohead is the last TRUE alternative band left out there. I watched Blink 182 and Greenday in concert last year, and I know everyone hates them but the show was fucking great. Nobody talks about shit anymore since Nirvana disbanded.

Rap/hiphop mainly just sucks these days. Guys like Flip, Nelly, P. Diddy...they suck so bad. Kanye West, Nas and Eminem are like the only good rappers left. Good hip hop is that old school shit. Matter of fact, ALL music is all about the old school, irrespective of genre.

Anyways, 12 good albums (maybe not the best) off the top of my head:

Sublime - Sublime

Nirvana - Nevermind

Beatles - Let It Be

Bob Marley - Legend

Nas - Illmatic

Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt

Outkast - Aquemini

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders

Frank Sinatra - Greatest Hits

Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die

Beatles - Sgt. Peppers

Greenday - Insomniac

I sometimes listen to some of the old and the new Alice Cooper stuff. Also some old school KISS, The Beatles, Stryper (gospel HM), Phil Collins, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Chicago, a LOT of gospel music (Rev. James Cleavland, Kenneth Copeland, etc.), some of the big bands of the 30's and 40's, some of the 50's music, some music soundtracks from a few movies, some of Cher's stuff, a little of Ozzy Osborne on Halloween sometimes, some Will Smith songs like "Men In Black", "Nod Ya Head"(MiB 2), some of Charlie Daniel's hit songs, Kenny Rogers, maybe some old school funk like the late Rick James, or Issac Hayes.

"Satch plays Fats" I'm not kidding--- You might be surprised. Go with "Handy" first. Louis was not a clown.

Hmmm, I seem to remember this question a long time ago...

Listening to:

1. System (always been a huge fan, since the self titled)
2. Billy Talent (New Canadian up and comers... DAMN fine musicians and people... you people may have heard the song 'Try Honesty')
3. Pink Floyd (The Wall. Yes, its stereotypical of me to choose this album, but I have it on vinyl and Ive just about worn the record thin)
4. Rammstein (Love em, love dancing to em, love video games to em.)
5. Run DMC/Cypress Hill (Two 'Rap' bands who are fucking damn underrated nowadays)
6. Rage Against the Machine (Its funny how Punkers and Rockmonkeys can say 'booo, fuck rap' and yet listen to Rage... ITS FUCKING RAP, AND FUCKING GOOD)
7. Assorted Techno (Heavy Fast Beats... mmmmmmm...)

Oh, and throw in about 15-20 different underground/non-mainstream/non- pop-punk punk/rock bands in there in different places, such as Pennywise, Dead Kennedys, Rise Against and etc.

Oh, on that note, has anyone else noticed the Sum 41 sound change? I'm guiltily starting to admit... Im listening. After hearing Moron, I gave some of their new stuff a listen... and uh... liked it... :S
